Most people do not realize that they face a serious wildfire danger but if you live in the grasslands, foothills, or mountains of Colorado, you are at risk. The fire department recommends clearing at least 100 feet around your home and remove trees, leaves, brush and pine needles. Also remove any overhanging tree branches near your home. If you live in a condominium or townhome community and have concerns about tree branches, contact your manager at Diversified Association Management.
Select landscape vegetation based on fire resistance and ease of maintenance. Evergreen bushes can be easy to maintain but pose a high fire risk if planted too close to your house. Make sure to give adequate spacing between plants, the taller the plants, the more widely spaced they should be. Many community associations have compiled lists of fire resistant and drought tolerant plants, contact Diversified Association Management to find out if your community has a list. You also want to make sure you have adequate insurance coverage in an event of a fire. If you are not sure what your association’s master insurance policy covers, contact your community manager at Diversified Association Management to get a copy of your association’s certificate. Read your individual policy and talk to your agent to make sure you have the proper coverage for your property and belongings before a fire hits. You should have a home inventory complete with descriptions and pictures. As an owner, no one else knows better than you as to what was lost and/or damaged. Even with the threat of wildfires, Colorado is one of the most beautiful states and has so much to offer. Enjoy the summer months and get out and enjoy everything Colorado has to offer!
